PREP Fill an 8-inch aluminum pie plate with the popcorn kernels and vegetable oil. Cover the pie plate with a 12-inch sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil; the foil should not be taut, leave it loose so it can expand to a 3-inch-high tent when the popcorn pops. Staple the edges of the foil to the edges of the pie plate. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, so the oil doesn’t leak, and store in a cool, dark place up to 2 weeks.

Prepare your campfire ahead of time so you have hot, glowing red coals at medium-high heat. Remove the pie plate from the plastic wrap.

Using long-handled metal tongs, grip as close to the pan’s edge as possible and hover it over the hot coals. When the popcorn starts popping, after about 5 minutes, start shaking the pan continuously to prevent the kernels from burning. When the kernels stop popping, 3 to 5 minutes, you’re done!

Remove the pan from the fire and poke the top of the foil with a fork or stick to release some of the steam. Open carefully so you don’t burn yourself. Transfer the popcorn to a serving bowl or keep in the pie plate. Drizzle the melted butter over the popcorn; add the crumbled seaweed, nutritional yeast (if using), and smoked sea salt; and toss together.

Pass around the campfire.
